Happy April! First grade is quickly approaching. We started our bug unit today. The students are so excited to get to learn all about bugs, their life cycles, what they look like, and where they live. We will be doing lots of fun bug projects for three weeks!
In math, we are still working on those math facts. I am hoping to have even more students join the principal's math fact club this month! Everyone is doing an awesome job. If you are seeing the math fact pages come hope with some answers missing, please work with your child on this at home since it was work not finished.
In reading, we are getting ready for our dibels test. We are reading nonsense words, sounding out words, and racing to see who can say the most letters in a minute. We are also working on fluency - reading sentences and having them make sense! Everyone is doing a super good job of reading!
We are in the middle of making our bug journals in writing. Each day students will be writing a fact about the bug of the day. When we are done with our bug unit - everyone will have an awesome bug journal to bring home and share all the cool bug facts that they learned!
Don't forget the field trip is coming up on April 15th. All students will be back at 1:30pm. Please be here at 1:30pm to pick up your students unless they go to kinder express in which case they are welcome to stay until the end of the day. All AM students must be picked up at 1:30pm.
Keep up the great work at home - if you have any questions, please email me!

February 10th
Valentine's Day is almost here! Is everyone ready? We are having lots of fun in kindergarten by doing lots of Valentine's writing and crafts. Everyone is super excited to exchange their Valentine's.
Remember, all Valentine's need to be brought to school by Monday. Donations for the party were due today. Please send them by Monday so we can have them for our party!
We are working really hard on our writing skills and are writing 2 sentences now! We are also continuing to work on our word families. This week we are doing the -en family. Next week we are doing the -et family. Practice spelling as many words as you can that end in those families!
In math we have started our touch math. Ask your child to show you what this means. Everyone is catching on really quickly to our math facts. Pretty soon we will be taking timed tests and sending some students to the cafeteria to participate in the principals math facts test.
Supplies - As always we are in need to glue sticks! If you can donate you child will appreciate it!
I will not be here tomorrow, February 11th. The sub will be Mrs. Jones. The students have had her before and love her.
Homework is due tomorrow as well. A new packet will go home on Monday February 14th!
I hope everyone has a great Valentine's weekend. If you have any questions. Please email me!

January 28th
Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a super week. I know we did in kindergarten celebrating the 100th day of school. We got to do lots of fun 100 projects and really enjoyed seeing all the different 100 collections everyone came up with. A BIG thank you to those who were able to come in and read too!
I know we have had lots of sick kiddos this past week. Remember to wash those hands! I am doing my part in the classroom with hand sanitizer and disinfecting the tables but please help me stop the spread by keeping sick coughing children at home. At this age they sometimes remember to cover their mouths but not always!!
This week we focused on the -ip family. Students are doing a great job of sounding out their word family words. Next week we will be doing the -ap family. See how many words you can come up with!
We have started something new here in kindergarten, enrichment groups. The older grades have been doing them since the beginning of the year and kindergarten is now joining in. Everyone Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, students are split up by their ability group and sent to new teachers. If your student has been telling you about a new teacher, this is what they are talking about!
Homework was due today. A new packet will go home on Monday.
A new behavior calendar will be added to your child's folder on Monday as well, make sure you are looking over it for important dates and no school dates.

January 20th
Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week. We have been working hard in kindergarten all week on sounding out words and finding the missing sounds. We have also been working on getting through our math books. Everyone is loving our new math books.
Today we are starting our math facts! Each student will be taking a timed math test to see how many addition problems they can do. We are starting slow by just learning how to take the tests and not timing. We are learning how to do them by using touch point math. Ask your student to explain how many points each number has and where the points are located on the number. We have learned numbers 0-5 this week!
Next week is spirit week and our 100 week. We are still looking for volunteers to come and help us read 100 books. If you or anyone in your family is able to read we would appreciate it!
100 collections are due on Tuesday, we are displaying these in the hallway, stop by and see "what 100 looks like"!
There are lots of donations coming in, thank you to those who have already donated for our 100 celebration. All donations need to be here by Thursday at the latest.
Yesterday we had the NED show come and visit us. NED taught us to Never give up, Encourage others, and always Do your best. NED is selling yoyo's to help pay for the presentation. They are for sale before and after school in the breezeway.
The spirit week schedule goes as followed -
Monday - sports day
Tuesday - twin day
Wednesday - PJ day
Thursday - Crazy hair day
Friday - School colors day
I hope everyone has a great week, if you have any questions, please email me!

January 5th
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great break. I can't believe it is already 2011. Before we know it, it will be spring break and then May!
This week we are reviewing for our Dibles test that is coming up next week. Dibles is the standardized test of kindergarten. Students will be pulled into another room to take the test. They will be asked to do several different portions of the test. On the first portion, they will have to say the beginning sound of the word. For example, if the teacher says "teach" they will need to say /t/. They have one minute for all of the parts of the test so the faster the better! The next part of the test is a letter assessment. Students have several rows of upper and lower case letters that they need to speed through saying the letter names, not the sounds. Students get points for how many letters they can name in a minute. The next test students are given a word and they must segment the sounds they hear. So if the teacher says cat they must say /c/-/a/-/t/. They need to break apart each sound they hear. The next portion students have to read make believe words. At this point we would at least like them to say the sounds of the word so if they see nuf, at the very least they need to be saying /n/-/u/-/f/. Ideally, we would like them to just read the word without having to sound it out.
I know there is a lot on this exam and it may look overwhelming but it doesn't seem to be for the students. We will be working all week on mastering these skills in class but any help at home would be great! The hardest one for them to do seems to be the segmenting of words so if everyone could work on that at home I know we will do super!
The honor roll assembly is on Friday from 8:30-9:15. We have several students being honored. Everyone is welcome to attend. If your child is receiving an award, you will be getting an invitation home today!
Homework was due yesterday, I did not receive very many packets. Please make sure you turn in your packet as soon as you can. Another packet went home yesterday. Please let me know if you did not receive one.
Please continue to read the little orange books at home. These students are definitely ready to be reading so your help at home will get them there!
